Healthy Eating | Health and Safety Topic of the Month
With the holidays upon us, it is more important than ever to make healthy food choices for both ourselves and for our children.
Here are some tips to get started:
At home, keep healthy food in clear sight…
- Keep fresh fruit on the counter so your child will see it when looking for a snack.
- Chopped vegetables can be stored in the refrigerator in clear containers at your child’s eye level.
- Make low-fat or skim milk available for your child to drink.
- Snack mixes are tasty, but high in calories. Put 1⁄4 cup serving of your child’s favorite snack mix in resealable snack bags to help with portion control.
- Cheese sticks come in single serve packs and are a great source of calcium.
- Low-fat yogurts come in 4-ounce packages and are a perfect after school snack.
When eating out ...
- Choose items that are broiled, grilled or baked. Try to avoid fried foods.
- Choose milk, 100% juice, or water as your beverage. Sodas add a lot of calories and have no nutritional value.
- Substitute baked potatoes, side salads or fruits for the fries.
Making good food choices now will help to ensure many healthy holidays with your family in the future. Have a safe and happy holiday season!
